Funds training stipends for teachers willing to take rural postings in under-resourced districts.
Why this matters in Mali
Teachers trained in Bamako and the regional capitals rarely ask for postings in villages hours from a paved road, where housing is basic, salaries can arrive late and insecurity has grown since the 2012 crisis. Rural schools are left with unfilled posts, with untrained contract or volunteer teachers, or with one teacher handling several grades at once. UNICEF reported that more than 2,000 schools were still closed because of insecurity as of June 2025, affecting over 600,000 students.
When a school does reopen, the hardest thing to restore is usually the teacher, not the building. Stipends during training make a rural posting a realistic choice for someone from the area, who already speaks the local language, knows families by name and has reasons to stay. Without that support, the people most likely to remain in a remote post are often the ones least able to afford the training.

Organization
Save the Children Mali · Mali
Charity Commission for England and Wales (parent: Save the Children International) · No. 1076822
Founded 1987 · Headquarters: Bamako
Operates an education programme in Mali (including the PADEM project with education officer roles in Bamako).
How they work: Save the Children's education work in the country has long relied on recruiting teachers from the communities a school serves and training them close to home, the approach behind its community schools in Sikasso. Village school management committees, which include parents, help select candidates and keep schools running day to day. The organization works alongside the Ministry of Education's regional and local offices so that community-trained teachers and schools fit into the public system rather than running parallel to it.
Track record: From 1992 to 2003 Save the Children's community schools programme in Mali's Sikasso region grew to about 800 schools serving nearly 50,000 children, training village teachers.

Giving in Mali
Rural distance is the problem each Malian cause tries to shorten. Girls in rural districts receive help with school costs and uniforms in a country where only about 35.6 percent of adults can read and write, and teachers receive stipends to accept postings in under-resourced areas. Health posts far from district hospitals get basic supplies through Muso, and solar-powered boreholes spare women and girls hours of daily walking to collect water. Plan International, Save the Children and WaterAid are among the partners.
