Supports community radio and rural journalists underserved by national media, through training, monitoring of media-freedom violations and advocacy for fairer media laws.
Why this matters in Zambia
National newspapers and television in Zambia are concentrated in Lusaka and the Copperbelt, and their reporting rarely reaches the villages and small towns of Western, North-Western, Luapula or Muchinga provinces. For many rural communities, the local community radio station is the only source of news in a familiar language, covering crop prices, health campaigns, council decisions and local elections.
These stations run on very small budgets. Many depend on volunteers, struggle to pay for electricity, transmitters and transport, and lose trained staff to better-paid jobs in town. Advertising is thin in rural markets, and stations can come under pressure from local political figures, especially during election campaigns, when balanced coverage matters most. Without steady support, rural newsrooms end up relaying content produced elsewhere instead of reporting on the issues that shape life in their own districts.
What your gift pays for
- Training for community radio staff in balanced reporting, fact-checking and election coverage
- Workshops run with partners such as UNESCO for rural reporters and producers
- Monitoring and public reporting of threats, arrests and closures affecting local media
- Advocacy on access-to-information, cyber and media laws that shape what stations can broadcast
Organization
MISA Zambia (Media Institute of Southern Africa – Zambia Chapter) · Zambia
Founded 1995
Zambian chapter of the regional media freedom body, supporting media development and freedom of expression and publishing annual state-of-the-media reports.
How they work: MISA Zambia works on two fronts: building the skills of media workers and defending the legal space they work in. It runs training for journalists and community radio staff, often with partners such as UNESCO, monitors and publicly reports violations of media freedom, and engages government and parliament on media legislation, including access-to-information and cyber laws. Its annual State of the Media reports give a national picture of conditions for journalists.
Track record: In June 2026 MISA Zambia and UNESCO trained journalists and producers at Mkushi and Bangwela community radio stations in conflict-sensitive election coverage.

Giving in Zambia
Rural livelihoods and wildlife link the four Zambian causes. Smallholder households recovering from consecutive poor harvests receive training in conservation farming, and Heifer International funds veterinary access for farmers whose income depends on livestock. In South Luangwa, rangers protect elephants and other wildlife from snaring and ivory poaching. MISA Zambia supports community radio and rural journalists in areas that national media rarely reach, adding an information dimension alongside farming and conservation.
4 causes are listed in Zambia, each with its own verified organization. $374,290 has been distributed to causes in Zambia since 2021.
