Funds telepsychiatry access for residents of sparsely populated northern regions, where the nearest mental health specialist can be hours away.
Why this matters in Sweden
Västerbotten stretches from the Gulf of Bothnia coast to the mountains on the Norwegian border, and most specialist care, including the psychiatric clinics at Norrland's University Hospital, is concentrated in Umeå and the coastal towns. In inland municipalities such as Sorsele, Storuman and Dorotea, the population is small, widely scattered and older than average, and a return trip to a specialist appointment can take most of a day, longer in winter.
Distance changes who gets care. Young people may not want to miss school or explain a long trip, adults in seasonal or shift work may not get time off, and some people with depression, anxiety or trauma do not make the trip at all. Small communities add another barrier: when everyone knows everyone, being seen at the local clinic is not private. Video consultations and structured online therapy allow treatment to start sooner and continue regularly without the travel.
What your gift pays for
- Video equipment and secure connections for local health centers and village community rooms
- Clinician time for remote psychiatric assessments and regular follow-up appointments
- Development and delivery of structured online therapy programs for rural residents
- Training for local primary care staff who support patients before and after remote sessions
Organization
Region Västerbotten · Sweden
Government body
Founded 2019 · Headquarters: Umeå
The regional health authority delivers psychiatry, including online therapy for sparsely populated areas.
How they work: Region Västerbotten is the publicly funded body responsible for health care in the county. In the inland it has set up community rooms in small villages, run by the local cottage hospitals, where residents can take basic measurements themselves and attend booked video visits with doctors, nurses, counselors and other staff. Online psychological treatment, such as the PTSD program developed with Umeå University and Region Norrbotten, extends this model to mental health.
Track record: Since 2023 the region has worked with Umeå University and Region Norrbotten on an online PTSD therapy for rural youth, running until 2027.

Giving in Sweden
An aging population and long distances in the north shape the Swedish list. Demensforbundet supports early dementia care as the over-80 population grows faster than the care workforce, and a northern regional health authority runs telepsychiatry for residents hours from a specialist. Winter food bank restocking and subsidized meal delivery for isolated seniors complete the four. Partners include a municipality and a regional authority as well as Stockholms Stadsmission, reflecting Sweden's mix of public and charitable provision.
