Why this matters in the United States

Rural counties are aging faster than cities as young adults leave and retirees stay. Many have lost a hospital, pharmacy or grocery store over the past two decades, and public transportation is thin or nonexistent. For an older person who can no longer drive, a specialist appointment an hour away depends entirely on a relative's or neighbor's goodwill.

Older Americans Act funding supports senior nutrition and transportation, but demand has grown faster than budgets, and many local programs keep waiting lists. Rural providers face higher costs per person because of distance, and their volunteer drivers are themselves getting older. A daily or weekly visit from a delivery driver or volunteer is often the only regular contact an isolated senior has, and it doubles as an informal safety check that catches falls, illness and unsafe living conditions early.

What your gift pays for

  • Rides to medical appointments, pharmacies and grocery stores for seniors who no longer drive
  • Mileage reimbursement for volunteer drivers who cover long distances on rural routes
  • Regular in-person safety checks for seniors living alone in remote farmhouses and small towns
  • Phone and video check-ins that keep contact going between in-person visits, especially in winter

Organization

Meals on Wheels America · United States

US IRS EIN · No. 23-7447812

Founded 1976 · Headquarters: Arlington

National network supporting local Meals on Wheels programmes that deliver meals and safety check-ins to seniors, including in rural counties.

How they work: Meals on Wheels America is a membership organization for thousands of independently run local programs, from county agencies to small volunteer groups. The national office does not deliver meals itself; it channels grants, research, training and advocacy to members, who decide how to serve their own communities. Local programs pair meal delivery with a personal visit and safety check, and many add transportation, pet food for clients' animals or home safety repairs. It also lobbies Congress on Older Americans Act funding.

Track record: Meals on Wheels America's network of local providers serves 2.6 million seniors and 244 million meals each year.

Giving in the United States

Where public systems leave gaps, the American causes on this site step in: rural towns that have lost their only hospital or cannot afford to fix aging water lines, cities where rents have outrun shelter capacity, and counties hit hardest by opioid overdoses. Other funds back veterans, survivors of domestic violence, foster youth aging out of care and Hispanic college students, many of them first-generation. Partners range from national nonprofits such as Meals on Wheels America and the American Red Cross to a federal rural health office and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

24 causes are listed in the United States, each with its own verified organization. $2,628,640 has been distributed to causes in the United States since 2021.
