Why this matters in Kenya

Many older Kenyans in rural counties live in houses built decades ago from mud, wattle and timber, under iron sheet or thatch roofs. These homes need regular upkeep: replastering walls, replacing termite-damaged poles and patching roofs before the rains. Once the owner can no longer do heavy work and grown children have moved to towns for jobs, that upkeep stops, and walls crack, roofs leak and floors stay damp.

Older people in these homes face falls and collapsing walls, chest infections from damp and smoke, and the loss of food and belongings when the rains come in. Some are raising grandchildren whose parents have died or migrated for work. The national cash transfer for older people, Inua Jamii, starts at age 70 and is meant for basic needs; it does not stretch to building materials or hired labor. Modest, targeted repairs can keep a house safe and dry for years.

What your gift pays for

  • Roofing sheets, timber and fixings to replace leaking or failing roofs before the rains
  • Wall repairs and replastering for houses weakened by cracks or termite damage
  • Skilled labor from local builders where the homeowner cannot do the work
  • Concrete floors and better ventilation that reduce damp, dust and smoke inside the home

Giving in Kenya

Housing is the dominant theme in Kenya, approached from several directions. Muungano wa Wanavijiji upgrades walkways, lighting and drainage in informal urban settlements instead of clearing them, the Kenya Society of Care Leavers provides peer mentoring and transition support for young people leaving institutional care, and Habitat for Humanity Kenya repairs unsafe rural homes for elderly residents. A fourth cause, with SAPTA, funds outpatient addiction treatment for people who cannot afford private rehabilitation.

4 causes are listed in Kenya, each with its own verified organization. $255,207 has been distributed to causes in Kenya since 2021.
