Funds basic medical supplies for rural health posts serving communities far from district hospitals.
Why this matters in Mali
Rural health posts are often the only formal care for villages far from district hospitals, and many operate with empty shelves. A nurse or community health worker may know exactly what a feverish child needs, but without malaria tests, antimalarials, oral rehydration salts or zinc, all they can do is send the family to a hospital that may be a full day away by cart or motorbike. Families often wait, try home remedies or buy whatever a roadside vendor sells, and children die of malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia that cost little to treat when caught early.
Supply lines in central Mali are under particular strain. Insecurity in the Mopti region since the mid-2010s has disrupted roads, markets and government services, and fuel shortages and blockades have made deliveries erratic. User fees, even small ones, also keep the poorest away until illness is serious. Keeping a reliable stock of basic supplies at the closest point of care, free to patients, often decides whether a sick child gets a quick treatment or a dangerous delay.
What your gift pays for
- Malaria rapid tests and antimalarial treatment for children and adults at rural health posts
- Oral rehydration salts, zinc and antibiotics for diarrhea and pneumonia in young children
- Delivery supplies, gloves and sterilization materials so births at health posts are safe
- Transport and stock management that keep shelves filled between deliveries
Organization
Muso · Mali
IRS EIN (parent: Muso Inc, US) · No. 20-3171837
Founded 2005 · Headquarters: Bamako
Supports rural community health centres and community health workers in Mali.
How they work: Muso's model, known as proactive community case management, sends salaried community health workers door to door to find sick people early rather than waiting for them to arrive. Workers test and treat common illnesses on the spot and refer serious cases to clinics, where Muso works to remove user fees and upgrade facilities, staffing and supplies. The organization partners with the government health system and has tested its approach in a large randomized trial in Bankass.
Track record: Muso has trained over 400 community health workers reaching 300,000 people in Mali and built eight new clinics in the Bankass district.

Giving in Mali
Rural distance is the problem each Malian cause tries to shorten. Girls in rural districts receive help with school costs and uniforms in a country where only about 35.6 percent of adults can read and write, and teachers receive stipends to accept postings in under-resourced areas. Health posts far from district hospitals get basic supplies through Muso, and solar-powered boreholes spare women and girls hours of daily walking to collect water. Plan International, Save the Children and WaterAid are among the partners.
