Why this matters in Spain
Castilla y León covers almost a fifth of Spain's territory, yet most of its more than 2,000 municipalities have only a few hundred residents, and many have far fewer. Provinces such as Soria, Zamora and Ávila have been losing young people for decades, leaving villages where most residents are over 65, few drive, and a bus may run once a week or not at all.
Rural health care in the region depends on small village surgeries, known as consultorios, visited by a doctor and nurse on set days. When those visits are cut or a surgery closes, older people with diabetes, heart failure or limited mobility face long trips to a health center or hospital for check-ups and diagnostic tests that a mobile unit could bring to the village square. Skipped appointments mean conditions are detected later and more emergency transfers over long distances, in a region where filling rural medical posts is a recurring problem.
What your gift pays for
- Operating costs for mobile units that bring diagnostic tests and check-ups to small villages
- Fuel and vehicle maintenance for routes covering widely scattered rural municipalities
- Portable diagnostic equipment for monitoring chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease close to home
- Scheduling and local outreach so older residents know when the unit will reach their village
Organization
Gerencia Regional de Salud de Castilla y León (Sacyl) · Spain
Government body
Founded 1993 · Headquarters: Valladolid
The regional health service runs mobile diagnostic units for peripheral and rural areas.
How they work: Sacyl is the public health service of the Junta de Castilla y León and is funded from the regional budget. Rural primary care is organized into basic health zones, each with a health center and a network of village surgeries that doctors and nurses visit on a rotating schedule. Mobile units extend this network, taking diagnostic services and emergency care to peripheral areas that cannot sustain a permanent facility.
Track record: As reported in July 2024, Sacyl grew its emergency mobile units from 166 to 194, with 62% based in rural basic health zones, and raised rural pharmacy subsidies by 17.5%.

Giving in Spain
Two very different gaps define the Spanish causes. Depopulated rural regions where local clinics have closed receive mobile health units through the regional health service of Castilla y Leon. Young jobseekers, in a country where youth unemployment stood at 23.4 percent in mid-2026, the second highest in the EU, gain company-based training, coaching and job placement through Fundacion Exit. One cause addresses the emptying countryside, the other the difficulty young people face in starting work, both long-running concerns in Spain.
2 causes are listed in Spain, each with its own verified organization. $284,549 has been distributed to causes in Spain since 2021.
