Why this matters in Mali

Mali's national education cluster counted 2,444 of the country's 11,860 schools closed in mid-2026, leaving about 733,200 children without classes, figures reported as the new school year opened in October. Insecurity in the north and center, including blockades by armed groups, accounts for most of the closures. Even where schools are open, girls in rural districts are far less likely than boys to reach and finish secondary school.

The barriers are often financial and practical. Public schooling is nominally free, yet families pay for uniforms, supplies, exam fees and contributions to parents' associations, and costs rise at secondary level, when the nearest school may be in another village. Parents who can afford one child's costs usually choose a son. Early marriage is common, and girls who marry rarely return to class. Covering fees and uniforms removes the expense that most often decides whether a daughter stays in school.

Organization

Plan International Mali · Mali

Charity Commission for England and Wales (parent: Plan International UK) · No. 276035

Founded 1976 · Headquarters: Bamako

Runs girls' education projects in Mali, including adolescent girls' inclusive education.

How they work: Plan International works through community structures such as school management committees and mothers' associations, which follow girls' attendance and take up concerns with families. Its girls' education projects often combine school support with clubs where adolescent girls learn about their rights, and with campaigns against child marriage aimed at parents, religious leaders and local authorities. Where insecurity closes schools, it supports alternative and catch-up learning.

Track record: Active in Mali since 1976, Plan International works to keep girls in school with qualified teachers and safe learning environments, including during crises.

Giving in Mali

Rural distance is the problem each Malian cause tries to shorten. Girls in rural districts receive help with school costs and uniforms in a country where only about 35.6 percent of adults can read and write, and teachers receive stipends to accept postings in under-resourced areas. Health posts far from district hospitals get basic supplies through Muso, and solar-powered boreholes spare women and girls hours of daily walking to collect water. Plan International, Save the Children and WaterAid are among the partners.
