Why this matters in Bulgaria

Where a village has lost most of its working-age adults, care for the old falls on whoever is left: a neighbor in her sixties, a spouse who is frail too, or a son who drives in from town at weekends. Children working in Sofia, Germany, Spain or the UK often send money but cannot be there. Many informal carers are elderly themselves and have no training in lifting, hygiene or managing medicines.

Publicly funded social services, including home assistance, are organized through municipalities, and in small rural municipalities the budget and staff rarely reach every hamlet. Residential homes have waiting lists and take people far from their own houses. Pooling resources across neighboring villages, so that one trained carer serves several households on a shared schedule, makes professional help affordable where no single family could pay for it, and gives informal carers backup and time to rest.

What your gift pays for

  • Wages for trained home carers who rotate among households in neighboring villages
  • Transport for carers moving between villages on a shared weekly visiting schedule
  • Short training sessions for family members on safe lifting, hygiene and medication routines
  • Incontinence supplies, walking aids and other basic equipment provided or loaned to households

Organization

Caritas Bulgaria · Bulgaria

BULSTAT (Bulgaria) · No. 831717723

Founded 1993 · Headquarters: Sofia

Runs home care services for elderly people, including in small towns and villages across Bulgaria.

How they work: Caritas Bulgaria is the social service arm of the Catholic Church in the country and works through diocesan member organizations, including Caritas Sofia and Caritas Ruse. Its home care model sends nurses and care workers into people's homes for medical and personal care, often to people living alone, and combines this with social work and volunteer support. Caritas also runs programs for refugees and people with disabilities, and has pressed for community-based home care to be recognized and funded within the national social services system.

Track record: In 2017 eight Caritas Home Care Centres supported 367 elderly people in 14 Bulgarian towns and villages, making 2,652 home visits a month.

Giving in Bulgaria

Rural decline is the background to two of the Bulgarian causes. Villages with some of Europe's fastest-shrinking populations are left with older residents who need company and care, and the Bulgarian Red Cross and Caritas Bulgaria respond with volunteer visits and shared caregiving support. The third cause, with the Balkan Heritage Foundation, restores smaller archaeological and cultural sites that fall outside major national funding, protecting heritage that would otherwise be left to deteriorate.

3 causes are listed in Bulgaria, each with its own verified organization. $341,097 has been distributed to causes in Bulgaria since 2021.
