Why this matters in India
Large parts of central and eastern India farm on rainfed uplands, in states such as Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh, where many smallholders belong to Adivasi communities. Rain arrives in a few monsoon months, often in heavy bursts that run straight off sloping fields, and a late or broken monsoon can wipe out the single paddy crop most families depend on. Without water in the dry season, land sits idle for half the year and men leave for cities or brick kilns to earn cash.
Canal schemes rarely reach these hilly areas, and a farmer with an acre or two cannot afford a pump, pipes or a well. Many villages do have streams or groundwater, but tapping them needs shared equipment and an agreed system for dividing water. When farmer groups own irrigation equipment collectively, they can grow a second crop of vegetables or pulses, cushion a failed monsoon and keep more family members working at home.

Delhi-based NGO helping smallholder farmer groups build irrigation and water-harvesting structures in rainfed areas.
How they work: PRADAN recruits university-educated professionals who live and work in rural blocks for years rather than visiting from a distance. They organize women into self-help groups, which federate into village and block-level bodies that plan land and water development together. Staff help these groups draw on government programs, notably the national rural employment guarantee, to finance water structures, and support them in managing shared assets once they are built.
Track record: As of March 2025 PRADAN supports 137,019 families a year in water conservation, with 64,081 hectares under irrigation management across eight Indian states.
