Why this matters in the United Kingdom
People found sleeping outside in England often carry several problems at once: poor physical health, mental illness, drug or alcohol dependency, a history of care or prison, and sometimes no recourse to public funds because of their immigration status. Each of these can block access to the housing and benefits that would otherwise bring someone indoors. London accounts for a large share of the problem, but outreach teams also cover coastal towns and smaller cities where services are thin.
Councils have duties toward homeless people, yet a single adult without a recognized priority need may receive advice rather than accommodation. That leaves outreach workers to build trust over many nights, find a bed, and connect people with health care and casework. Winter adds physical danger. Emergency beds open when severe weather protocols are triggered, but they are temporary, and someone brought inside for a few cold nights still needs a route into settled housing afterward.

- Emergency bed nights opened when severe weather protocols are triggered
- Travel, ID documents and phone credit that help someone move from the street into accommodation
- Caseworker time linking people with GP registration, mental health care and addiction services
Organization
St Mungo's · United Kingdom
Charity Commission for England and Wales · No. 1149085
Founded 1969 · Headquarters: London
Homelessness charity running street outreach teams and hostels for people sleeping rough in England.
How they work: St Mungo's outreach workers go out on scheduled shifts, including night shifts, and respond to sightings reported by the public through StreetLink, the national referral service. Once contact is made, workers assess needs, help with documents and benefit claims, and arrange a place to stay. Because the charity also runs hostels, supported housing and recovery services for mental health and substance use, a person first met on the street can move into a bed and then into longer-term accommodation within the same organization.
Track record: In 2024-25 St Mungo's 14 outreach services supported 10,242 people; 80% of those helped off the streets did not return to rough sleeping.

Giving in the United Kingdom
Long waits and stretched budgets connect most of the British causes here. Several respond to NHS waiting lists in England, including the more than 550,000 children and young people waiting for mental health support, while others address rough sleeping, food bank demand still far above pre-pandemic levels, unlawful evictions and winter warmth for low-income pensioners. Youth employment, foster care, regional theatres and rare genetic disease research round out the range, with established charities such as The Trussell Trust, St Mungo's, Shelter and Age UK as partners.
19 causes are listed in the United Kingdom, each with its own verified organization. $1,137,510 has been distributed to causes in the United Kingdom since 2021.
