Why this matters in the United Kingdom

Rough sleeping is the sharpest end of homelessness. People bedded down in doorways, parks and stairwells face cold-related illness, assault and a far shorter life expectancy than the general population. The government's autumn 2025 snapshot counted 4,793 people sleeping rough in England on a single night, up from 4,667 a year earlier, with roughly a quarter of them in London.

Councils open extra beds under the Severe Weather Emergency Protocol when freezing temperatures are forecast, but those beds are tied to forecasts and often close again once a cold snap passes. Many rough sleepers have no local connection, have no recourse to public funds, or have been turned away from hostels because of their support needs, so the standard route into council housing does not reach them. Winter shelter beds funded outside the statutory system fill that gap and give outreach workers somewhere to bring a person tonight rather than adding a name to a waiting list.

What your gift pays for

  • Emergency bed spaces kept open through the coldest months, beyond the nights covered by severe-weather protocols
  • Bedding, hot food and washing facilities for people coming straight in from the street
  • Night outreach shifts that find people sleeping out and bring them indoors
  • Key-worker time to move each guest from a shelter bed toward longer-term accommodation

Organization

St Mungo's · United Kingdom

Charity Commission for England and Wales · No. 1149085

Founded 1969 · Headquarters: London

UK homelessness charity running street outreach and accommodation for rough sleepers.

How they work: St Mungo's runs street outreach teams that go out late at night and early in the morning to find people bedded down, often acting on referrals from the public and local councils. Workers assess each person's situation, including health, immigration status and local connection, and then arrange a place in one of the charity's hostels or emergency accommodation services. Much of this work is commissioned by London boroughs and other councils, so its winter provision runs alongside statutory services rather than replacing them.

Track record: In 2024-25 St Mungo's supported 427 people into emergency accommodation during severe weather and provided safe accommodation for 2,183 people every night.

Giving in the United Kingdom

Long waits and stretched budgets connect most of the British causes here. Several respond to NHS waiting lists in England, including the more than 550,000 children and young people waiting for mental health support, while others address rough sleeping, food bank demand still far above pre-pandemic levels, unlawful evictions and winter warmth for low-income pensioners. Youth employment, foster care, regional theatres and rare genetic disease research round out the range, with established charities such as The Trussell Trust, St Mungo's, Shelter and Age UK as partners.

19 causes are listed in the United Kingdom, each with its own verified organization. $1,137,510 has been distributed to causes in the United Kingdom since 2021.
