Why this matters in Bangladesh
More than one million Rohingya live in the camps of Cox's Bazar, most of them since the 2017 exodus from Myanmar, and UNHCR counted more than 150,000 recent arrivals by June 2026 as fighting in Rakhine State continued. Families live in shelters of bamboo and tarpaulin packed onto steep, deforested hills, and the government does not permit permanent concrete structures, so homes must be repaired or rebuilt again and again.
The weather undoes that work each year. Monsoon rains bring landslides and floods, and in July 2026 Human Rights Watch reported at least 17 deaths and more than 3,000 people displaced within the camps. Cyclones and fast-spreading fires add to the damage, while drainage channels, footpaths, stairs and latrines wear out under heavy use. Funding for the response has fallen sharply, cutting food rations and slowing shelter improvements, and the maintenance backlog grows with every rainy season.

How they work: BRAC runs shelter work in the camps alongside water, sanitation, health and education programs, so repairs connect with the same community structures families already use. It works with Rohingya volunteers and staff alongside Bangladeshi engineers on construction and maintenance, organizes pre-monsoon reinforcement and site improvement, and sends emergency response teams after landslides and fires. BRAC also runs programs in the surrounding host communities, where pressure on land, jobs and resources has grown.
Track record: By October 2018 BRAC had housed 151,515 Rohingya refugees in 30,303 shelters, upgraded 7,774 shelters and built 18,754 latrines in the Cox's Bazar camps.
