Funds informal learning centers inside Cox's Bazar camps, since Rohingya children have no legal right to Bangladesh's formal school system.
Why this matters in Bangladesh
Around 1 million Rohingya refugees live in the camps of Cox's Bazar, most of them since fleeing military violence in Myanmar in 2017, and roughly half are children. Bangladesh treats the camps as temporary and does not allow Rohingya children to enroll in its national schools or sit its exams, so learning happens in bamboo-and-tarpaulin centers inside the camps. In recent years a Myanmar curriculum has been introduced so that what children learn could count if they are ever able to return.
The whole system depends on outside funding. In June 2025, cuts forced nearly 6,500 learning facilities in the camps to close, including all 947 run by BRAC, cutting off more than 300,000 children. By early 2026 only about half of the camps' learning centers were operating, and new funding covers only part of the gap. Out of class, older girls tend to be kept at home and face early marriage, while boys are pushed into informal work or drawn toward armed groups active in the camps. Monsoon storms and fires regularly damage the learning centers as well.

Organization
BRAC · Bangladesh
Founded 1972 · Headquarters: Dhaka
Runs learning centres for Rohingya children in the Cox's Bazar camps.
How they work: BRAC's camp education draws on decades of running low-cost, one-room schools in rural Bangladesh. Learning centers pair teachers from the host community with Rohingya instructors who share the children's language and culture, covering Burmese, English, maths and life skills. For younger children BRAC runs Humanitarian Play Labs, play-based early learning spaces led by trained Rohingya women and built around Rohingya songs, stories and games.
Track record: By January 2018 BRAC had opened 200 learning centres in four Cox's Bazar camps teaching 21,000 Rohingya children aged 4-14; by Oct 2018, 39,265 children were registered in 482 centres.

Giving in Bangladesh
Floods, refugees and pressures on childhood connect the Bangladesh causes. Two serve the Rohingya camps around Cox's Bazar, one of the world's largest and most protracted refugee settlements, through informal learning centers and shelter repair. Others build raised latrines in low-lying delta communities, fund schooling, shelter and skills training that help children move from garment and brick-kiln work into learning, and fund scholarships that keep girls in school in districts with high child marriage rates. BRAC, one of the largest development organizations based in Bangladesh, partners on most of them.
