Why this matters in Indonesia
Villages along the lower Brantas and other East Java rivers sit downstream of paper mills, food processors, sugar factories and intensively farmed fields. Many households still bathe, wash and sometimes cook with river water or with shallow wells fed by the same river, because piped connections from the regional water utility do not reach them or cost more than they can pay. Where the utility draws from the river it treats the water; families outside its network get no such protection.
The contamination is a mix of industrial effluent, pesticide and fertilizer runoff, untreated household sewage and, increasingly, plastic. Mass fish die-offs on the Brantas have repeatedly exposed illegal discharges, but enforcement is slow and court rulings take years to change conditions on the ground. Testing that shows families what is in their water, and evidence strong enough to hold polluters to account, are where cleaner rivers and safer daily use begin.

How they work: Ecoton grew out of a university biology research club and still works largely through field science: sampling water, fish and sediment, and in recent years cataloguing microplastics with students it calls river detectives. It trains residents, including a river-defender women's group, on the laws that protect rivers, and has backed citizen lawsuits against provincial and national authorities over fish deaths and waste dumping. Its strengths are evidence gathering, community education and legal pressure.
Track record: Ecoton's 2021 expedition documented industrial pollution in Java's Brantas, Bengawan Solo and Citarum rivers, and it is assessing 68 Indonesian rivers for microplastics.
