Why this matters in Papua New Guinea
Most Papua New Guineans live in rural villages, and in the Highlands many of those villages are linked to the nearest hospital by a rough road, a long walk or nothing at all. When labor begins at night or in the wet season, a woman may have no realistic way to reach a health facility, so many births take place at home without anyone trained to manage heavy bleeding, obstructed labor or a newborn who is not breathing.
Rural aid posts and health centers are often understaffed and short of basic supplies, and some have closed altogether. Antenatal visits that would catch high blood pressure, anemia or a breech position are easily missed when a clinic is a day away. Low-cost clinics where women are checked before birth and return with their babies afterward catch many of these problems early, around labor and the first days after delivery, when most preventable maternal and newborn deaths occur.

How they work: Susu Mamas offers low-cost, integrated services in one place, so a woman attending for antenatal care can also receive family planning, sexual and reproductive health care, immunizations for her baby and routine child health checks. Its Port Moresby clinic is attached to the General Hospital. Outside the capital it runs clinics and services alongside other health facilities, and it has worked with Marie Stopes under the Australian-funded Partnering for Strong Families program.
Track record: Founded to provide antenatal and postnatal care, Susu Mamas runs clinics in Port Moresby, Mt Hagen and Lae; its Port Moresby clinic sees 100-150 women a day.
