Funds repairs, accessibility works and energy-saving upgrades for small regional theatres at risk of closure as council budgets tighten and building costs rise.
Why this matters in the United Kingdom
Many smaller theatres outside London occupy Victorian and Edwardian buildings or converted halls that are expensive to heat, hard to make accessible, and frequently in need of roof, wiring and stage-machinery repairs. They are run by charities, community trusts or local councils, often with a handful of staff and a large volunteer team, and for many towns they are the only live performance venue for miles.
Pressures have stacked up since the pandemic. Audiences have returned unevenly and tend to book later, energy bills jumped in 2022, and councils, long a source of support, have cut arts grants as their own finances have tightened. A theatre that closes is hard to bring back: the building may be sold, converted or left to decay, and the skills and community around it disperse. Modest repairs done in time can be what keeps a venue licensed, safe and open.

Organization
Theatres Trust · United Kingdom
Charity Commission for England and Wales (The Theatres Trust Charitable Fund) · No. 274697
Founded 1976 · Headquarters: London
UK national advisory body for theatres that campaigns for theatres at risk and awards small grants to community theatres.
How they work: Theatres Trust is the statutory consultee on planning applications affecting theatre buildings in England, so it can step in early when a venue is threatened by redevelopment or change of use. Each year it publishes a Theatre Buildings at Risk register that draws attention to endangered buildings and helps local campaigns raise money. It advises owners and community groups on building projects and gives small grants for practical improvements such as repairs, access and energy efficiency.
Track record: Since a 2021 pilot, the Trust's Small Grants Programme has supported more than 100 theatres across the UK with repairs, accessibility and energy-efficiency upgrades.

Giving in the United Kingdom
Long waits and stretched budgets connect most of the British causes here. Several respond to NHS waiting lists in England, including the more than 550,000 children and young people waiting for mental health support, while others address rough sleeping, food bank demand still far above pre-pandemic levels, unlawful evictions and winter warmth for low-income pensioners. Youth employment, foster care, regional theatres and rare genetic disease research round out the range, with established charities such as The Trussell Trust, St Mungo's, Shelter and Age UK as partners.
19 causes are listed in the United Kingdom, each with its own verified organization. $1,137,510 has been distributed to causes in the United Kingdom since 2021.
