Why this matters in Italy

Most museums in Italy are small. Civic collections, diocesan museums, rural-life and ethnographic displays and single-collector house museums are spread through villages and provincial towns, run by a municipality, a parish or a volunteer association. They keep local archaeology, work tools, religious art and photographs that tell the story of a valley or a trade, and they are often the only cultural institution in town.

Their budgets depend mostly on municipalities, which have faced years of spending limits, and on regional grants that rise and fall. Many open only a few days a week or by appointment, with one paid staff member or none. National reforms since 2014 have concentrated attention on the large state museums, leaving smaller ones with little for conservation, digital cataloging, accessibility or school programs. When a key volunteer retires or a grant ends, a museum can close for years, and its collection may sit unmonitored.

Organization

Associazione Nazionale Piccoli Musei · Italy

Founded 2007

National association representing and supporting Italy's small museums, including training initiatives and the National Day of Small Museums.

How they work: The association argues that small museums should not be judged by the standards of large ones; their strengths are the welcome they give visitors and their close ties to place. It works as a network, sharing practice among members, running training courses for staff and volunteers on hospitality and communication, and holding national conferences. Its Giornata Nazionale dei Piccoli Musei, launched with support from Touring Club Italiano, opens participating museums free of charge with special visits and events.

Track record: Represented 184 member museums in June 2017 and launched the first Giornata Nazionale dei Piccoli Musei, in which 183 small museums took part.

Giving in Italy

Cultural heritage outside the major national programs is the main subject of the Italian causes. FAI restores smaller, unlisted historic sites valued by local communities, the Cineteca di Bologna restores and digitizes aging film archives, and an association of small museums trains staff and volunteers across its member network. The one social cause, with Agevolando, provides early housing support for young people at risk of homelessness after leaving unstable family situations.
