Funds French-language bridging classes for young refugees and asylum seekers enrolling in the school system.
Why this matters in France
Young people who arrive alone, or with families seeking asylum, often reach the French school system at fifteen, sixteen or seventeen with little French and patchy previous schooling. Education is compulsory only to sixteen, followed by a duty of training to eighteen, so older newcomers depend on a place being found for them, and waits for assessment and placement can last months in some départements.
Public schools run specialized units for newly arrived pupils who do not speak French, known as UPE2A, but places are limited and students usually spend only part of the week there. Teenagers whose age is disputed can fall between child protection and adult services and receive neither. Without solid French they cannot follow vocational courses or apprenticeships, which are often the quickest route to work and can bear on whether they obtain a residence permit at eighteen. Intensive bridging classes give them the language they need to keep up.

Organization
Apprentis d'Auteuil · France
France SIREN (Fondation Apprentis d'Auteuil) · No. 775688799
Founded 1866 · Headquarters: Paris
Foundation supporting unaccompanied migrant minors with schooling and training.
How they work: A Catholic foundation recognized as being of public utility, Apprentis d'Auteuil runs its own schools, vocational high schools and training centers alongside children's homes. Much of its work with young migrants is carried out under agreements with départements responsible for child protection, which place young people in its housing and support services. Educators combine day-to-day care with French lessons and guidance toward vocational qualifications such as the CAP, so language learning leads into a trade.
Track record: Supports over 30,000 young people and families in about 230 establishments, including services for unaccompanied minors that offer French-as-a-foreign-language classes.

Giving in France
Pressures on cities and household budgets tie the French causes together. Samusocial de Paris provides shelter beds and hot meals for a homeless population estimated at 350,000, more than double the 2012 figure. Young refugees and asylum seekers receive French-language bridging classes as they enter school, children in lower-income neighborhoods get free one-to-one mentoring from university students, and low-income pensioners receive heating help in winter. Partners are French associations, among them Apprentis d'Auteuil, AFEV and Petits Freres des Pauvres.
4 causes are listed in France, each with its own verified organization. $264,271 has been distributed to causes in France since 2021.
