Funds medical supplies and staff at health posts in settlements hosting South Sudanese and Congolese refugees.
Why this matters in Uganda
Uganda hosts more refugees than any other country in Africa, most of them from South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Under its settlement policy, refugees receive plots of land and can move and work, but the settlements are rural, spread out and often in the poorest districts of West Nile and the southwest. Health centers there serve refugees and local host communities alike, and new arrivals keep adding to the load.
People arriving after weeks of flight often bring malnutrition, malaria, untreated injuries, pregnancy complications and trauma. Within the settlements, malaria, respiratory infections and diarrheal disease are common, and chronic conditions such as HIV need uninterrupted medication. Humanitarian funding for the response has fallen in recent years, and health facilities feel cuts quickly, through stockouts and reduced staffing. When a health post runs out of drugs or loses a nurse, patients walk further or go without care.

Major health partner running health centres in Uganda's refugee settlements.
How they work: Medical Teams International works as an implementing partner in the national refugee health response, which is coordinated by the Office of the Prime Minister and UNHCR alongside district health authorities. It runs primary health centers in settlements and services at transit points where new arrivals are screened. Its model relies heavily on community health workers, many of them refugees, who visit households, identify sick people and refer them, alongside programs for nutrition, maternal health and mental health.
Track record: As of 2024 Medical Teams International had provided health care to refugees and host communities in Uganda for 20 years, including at Elegu, Nyumanzi Transit Centre and Kiryandongo.
