Funds asylum application legal assistance, addressing long backlogs in the country's asylum court system.
Why this matters in Germany
Asylum seekers in Germany receive a first decision from the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). Those who are refused, or granted a weaker status than they believe they qualify for, can appeal to the administrative courts. A substantial share of these appeals succeed, which shows how often first-instance decisions are flawed, but filing deadlines are short, usually two weeks and sometimes one, and the appeal has to engage with country-of-origin evidence and European asylum law.
State-funded legal help is limited. Court legal aid is granted only when a judge sees sufficient prospects of success, and a person who has just arrived often cannot build that case alone, in German, from a reception center. Meanwhile, appeals can sit in overloaded courts for many months, during which people cannot plan work, schooling or family reunification. Paying a specialized lawyer early, before deadlines lapse, is often what decides whether a strong claim is ever properly heard.
What your gift pays for
- Lawyers' fees for appeals against refused or downgraded asylum decisions
- Representation in test cases that can change practice for many applicants at once
- Certified translations and country evidence needed to support an individual claim
Organization
PRO ASYL · Germany
Vereinsregister, Amtsgericht Frankfurt am Main (Förderverein PRO ASYL e.V.) · No. VR 9115
Founded 1986 · Headquarters: Frankfurt am Main
German refugee-rights NGO that runs a donor-funded legal assistance fund paying lawyers' fees in asylum cases.
How they work: PRO ASYL is a campaigning and advice organization rather than a law firm. Its staff review requests for help and decide which cases the legal assistance fund will back, often choosing cases that test a point of law so one ruling can benefit many people in similar situations. It works closely with the regional refugee councils (Flüchtlingsräte) and local advice centers, offers individual counseling to refugees and their supporters, and publishes legal analyses that lawyers and volunteers draw on.
Track record: PRO ASYL's advisors assist an average of 5,000 people a year, and its legal assistance fund pays lawyers' fees in asylum cases up to the constitutional court.

Giving in Germany
Labor shortages and migration tie together much of the German list. Language-bridging courses help refugee and migrant youth enter the Ausbildung vocational system, while other funds train new elder-care workers and subsidize home-care visits as formal care places become harder to secure. The range extends to asylum legal aid through PRO ASYL, winter shelter for an estimated 531,600 homeless people, flood repair grants in river valleys, diagnostic guidance for people with rare diseases and string instrument loans for gifted young musicians. Partners include welfare federations such as Caritas and Diakonie alongside the German Red Cross.
9 causes are listed in Germany, each with its own verified organization. $854,499 has been distributed to causes in Germany since 2021.
