Funds Polish-language bridging classes for refugee children, an area a World Bank report identified as a key barrier to economic integration for displaced families.
Why this matters in Poland
Poland has taken in a large Ukrainian refugee population since 2022, and many school-age children among them spent their first years in exile following Ukrainian online classes rather than attending local schools. From September 2024, school attendance became a condition for receiving the main child benefit, which brought a sudden wave of enrolments of children with little or no Polish. Smaller groups of children come from Belarus, Chechnya and elsewhere.
Schools can open preparatory classes and offer extra language lessons, but provision depends on each municipality, and teachers trained to teach Polish as a foreign language are scarce. A child who cannot follow lessons falls behind in every subject, and teenagers in particular risk dropping out before upper secondary exams. Bridging classes give them a structured period to build academic language, so that time in a mainstream classroom means learning rather than waiting.
What your gift pays for
- Teacher time for intensive Polish bridging groups held before or alongside regular lessons
- Textbooks and workbooks designed for learning Polish as a second language
- One-to-one tutoring in core subjects while a child's language catches up
- Initial assessments so groups match each child's level rather than age alone
Organization
Fundacja Ocalenie (Ocalenie Foundation) · Poland
National Court Register (KRS), Poland; NIP 1181570203 · No. KRS 0000030279
Founded 2000 · Headquarters: Warsaw
Supports refugee children with tutoring and runs Polish-language projects for migrants.
How they work: Ocalenie works directly with refugees and migrants from its center in Warsaw, combining practical assistance, legal and integration advice and education under one roof. Its tutoring for children relies largely on trained volunteers who meet a child regularly, often one to one, and keep in touch with parents and schools. Polish courses for teenagers and adults run at several levels. The foundation also speaks publicly on asylum policy and provided aid to people stranded on the Polish-Belarusian border from 2021.
Track record: Ocalenie has run Polish language classes for foreigners since 2009 and, since 2018, its "Knowledge to the Max" tutoring programme supports about 100 refugee children a year at risk of dropping out.

Giving in Poland
Displacement across Poland's eastern borders shapes three of its four causes. Polish-language bridging classes help refugee children settle into school, job-placement support helps displaced Ukrainian families enter the labor market, and Grupa Granica provides humanitarian aid to people crossing the dangerous Belarus border. The fourth supports a nationwide association of Polish UN peacekeeping veterans that keeps former peacekeepers connected. Partners are Polish civil society organizations, including the Ocalenie Foundation, which runs both integration programs.
4 causes are listed in Poland, each with its own verified organization. $289,426 has been distributed to causes in Poland since 2021.
