Why this matters in Jordan

Most refugees in Jordan do not live in camps. Syrians, Iraqis, Yemenis, Sudanese and others are spread through cities such as Amman, Irbid and Mafraq, often in crowded rented housing, and many have now spent more than a decade in the country. Their health needs have shifted from emergency care toward chronic disease, mental health, maternal and child health, and the effects of prolonged poverty.

Planning for this is difficult because data is patchy. The rules on refugees' access to subsidized public health care have changed several times as government policy and donor funding shifted, and non-Syrian refugees often fall outside the main response plans. Health ministries and service providers need reliable evidence on who is missing care, why, and with what results, and that evidence has to be gathered carefully and ethically from people in fragile circumstances. Independent local research helps match services to the population that actually exists rather than the one assumed years ago.

Organization

Information and Research Center – King Hussein Foundation (IRCKHF) · Jordan

Founded 1996 · Headquarters: Amman

Amman-based research centre conducting social and health research including on refugee and displaced populations.

How they work: IRCKHF organizes its work around research, evaluations, awareness and advocacy, and knowledge sharing. Its projects include needs assessments, situation analyses and program evaluations on topics such as sexual and reproductive health, gender-based violence, child protection and youth, often carried out with UN agencies, international NGOs and universities. The center publishes its studies so that findings can be used by service providers and policymakers, and it presents results to the organizations that commissioned or will act on them.

Track record: In 2011, with the Institute for Family Health, IRCKHF assessed the health and psychosocial needs of Iraqi refugees in Al-Hashmi Al-Shamali, Amman, incl. access barriers.

Giving in Jordan

Since 2011, Syrian refugees have lived in Jordanian host communities where housing costs have risen sharply, and that shared life frames all four causes. The Norwegian Refugee Council provides rent subsidies, a second fund provides food, rent support and Ramadan and Eid aid through Islamic Relief, and Caritas Jordan distributes winter blankets and heating fuel through its centers and volunteers to refugees and local households alike. A research fund at the King Hussein Foundation studies long-term refugee health to inform regional planning.

4 causes are listed in Jordan, each with its own verified organization. $283,856 has been distributed to causes in Jordan since 2021.
