Why this matters in Moldova
Only about 12 percent of the land is forested, by World Bank figures, which places Moldova among the least wooded countries in Europe. Most of the rest is farmland. The country has some of the richest black chernozem soils on the continent, and generations of intensive cultivation cleared woods and shelterbelts right up to field edges and onto steep slopes. Gullies and landslides now eat into hillsides, especially in the center and south, where rainfall is lower and droughts have become more frequent.
Forest strips shield fields from drying winds, slow runoff on slopes and supply the firewood many rural households still burn in winter. Much of the degraded land suitable for planting belongs to local councils or is split among small private owners who lack seedlings, labor or technical advice. Planting is only the first step: saplings need weeding, replacement of losses and protection from grazing for several years before a stand can survive the dry summers on its own.

Government runs national afforestation campaigns planting millions of saplings.
How they work: Agenția Moldsilva manages most state-owned forest through a network of regional forestry enterprises, which grow seedlings in their own nurseries and carry out planting, tending and protection. Under the national program it also works with local councils and landowners on land they make available for afforestation. Planting campaigns each spring and autumn open the work to volunteers, schools, public institutions and companies, with forestry staff preparing sites and supervising.
Track record: Moldova's Forest Generation programme, launched in 2023, aims to plant or rehabilitate about 145,000 hectares by 2032; in November 2025 over 110,000 saplings were planted on 27 hectares.
