Funds short-term rental assistance that moves families out of shelters faster than shelter stays alone, as homelessness in national counts remains near record levels.
Why this matters in the United States
Families with children made up about 230,000 of the roughly 745,650 people counted as homeless on a single night in January 2025, according to HUD's annual assessment. That count was the first annual decline since 2016, but it followed years of increases, and family shelters in many cities still hold parents and children for months while they search for an apartment they can afford on low wages.
For most of these families the barrier is the gap between rents and incomes, plus the up-front cost of moving: a security deposit, first month's rent, application fees and sometimes old utility debts that block a new account. Federal housing vouchers reach only a fraction of eligible households, and waiting lists in many cities run for years. Rapid re-housing covers that gap for a limited period, so a family can sign a lease now and take over the rent as income stabilizes, instead of waiting in a shelter until a voucher comes through.
What your gift pays for
- Security deposits and first month's rent so a family can sign a lease
- Short-term rent subsidies that taper off as household income stabilizes
- Utility arrears and reconnection fees that otherwise block a new tenancy
- Case manager time for landlord outreach, apartment search and budgeting after move-in

Volunteers of America · United States
US IRS EIN · No. 72-0563822
Founded 1896 · Headquarters: Alexandria
US national nonprofit whose affiliates provide homelessness services including rapid re-housing and rental assistance for families and veterans.
How they work: Founded in 1896 by Ballington and Maud Booth, Volunteers of America is a federation of local affiliates, each running programs suited to its own region, often under contracts with city and county homelessness systems. In rapid re-housing, affiliate case managers help households find units, negotiate with landlords and arrange time-limited rental assistance while working on employment and benefits. Several affiliates also deliver the Department of Veterans Affairs' Supportive Services for Veteran Families grants, which pair rental help with case management.
Track record: Volunteers of America Los Angeles received $4 million in SSVF grants in FY 2014 and served 491 individuals through rapid re-housing and prevention services.

Giving in the United States
Where public systems leave gaps, the American causes on this site step in: rural towns that have lost their only hospital or cannot afford to fix aging water lines, cities where rents have outrun shelter capacity, and counties hit hardest by opioid overdoses. Other funds back veterans, survivors of domestic violence, foster youth aging out of care and Hispanic college students, many of them first-generation. Partners range from national nonprofits such as Meals on Wheels America and the American Red Cross to a federal rural health office and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
24 causes are listed in the United States, each with its own verified organization. $2,628,640 has been distributed to causes in the United States since 2021.
