Why this matters in the United States

Children from low-income households are less likely to visit museums, zoos and science centers outside school, and that gap mirrors wider differences in out-of-school learning. Ticket prices are a common barrier, especially for families with several children, alongside transport and a sense that such places are not meant for them. School field trips, once a guaranteed visit for many children, depend on district budgets for buses and staff time that are often among the first items cut.

Museums face their own squeeze. Public support at federal, state and local levels has fallen, and in 2025 the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, a long-standing source of museum grants, was targeted for elimination and terminated many of its awards, leaving museums unsure what federal support would remain. When budgets shrink, free days, school outreach and community programs tend to go first, even though they serve the visitors least able to pay full price.

What your gift pays for

  • Recruitment and onboarding of new museums, science centers and zoos into the reduced-admission program
  • Promotion through libraries, schools and social services so eligible families know access exists
  • Upkeep of the online directory families use to find participating venues near them
  • Marketing toolkits and evaluation resources that help participating museums reach low-income visitors

Organization

Association of Science and Technology Centers (Museums for All) · United States

US IRS EIN · No. 52-1926756

Founded 1973 · Headquarters: Washington, D.C.

ASTC administers Museums for All, offering reduced admission to low-income families at hundreds of US museums.

How they work: Museums for All relies on a simple national eligibility signal: visitors show a SNAP EBT card, the benefits card for federal food assistance, and pay a reduced admission of a few dollars or nothing at all. Each participating museum sets its own price within the program's range and is listed in a shared online directory, so families can find venues anywhere. ASTC runs the program as an initiative created with the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and provides participating institutions with marketing and evaluation resources.

Track record: Since its 2014 launch, the Museums for All reduced-admission initiative has grown to 1,000 participating museums and served more than 5 million visitors.

Giving in the United States

Where public systems leave gaps, the American causes on this site step in: rural towns that have lost their only hospital or cannot afford to fix aging water lines, cities where rents have outrun shelter capacity, and counties hit hardest by opioid overdoses. Other funds back veterans, survivors of domestic violence, foster youth aging out of care and Hispanic college students, many of them first-generation. Partners range from national nonprofits such as Meals on Wheels America and the American Red Cross to a federal rural health office and the Department of Veterans Affairs.

24 causes are listed in the United States, each with its own verified organization. $2,628,640 has been distributed to causes in the United States since 2021.
