Why this matters in Lebanon

Since the economic collapse that began in 2019, the Lebanese pound has lost more than 90 percent of its value, bank savings were frozen and salaries paid in local currency shrank to a fraction of their former worth. The state lifted most subsidies on imported medicines in 2021, so prices for chronic disease drugs rose many times over. Families who once paid for private doctors now skip consultations, ration insulin or blood pressure pills, or wait until a condition becomes an emergency.

Public hospitals and the government's primary care network are underfunded, and many doctors and nurses have emigrated. The 2024 war damaged health facilities in the south, the Bekaa and Beirut's southern suburbs and displaced large numbers of people, many of whom have since returned to damaged homes and lost livelihoods. Lebanese households, Syrian refugees and migrant workers now rely on the same limited affordable services. Community health centers that charge small, fixed fees keep routine care within reach and stop treatable conditions from turning into hospital admissions.

Organization

Amel Association International · Lebanon

Public utility recognition by presidential decree (Lebanon) · No. Presidential Decree 5832 (1994)

Founded 1979 · Headquarters: Beirut

Lebanese NGO running a network of primary health care centres with subsidised care.

How they work: Amel is non-sectarian and serves anyone who comes to its centers, whatever their nationality or religion, a principle set by its founder, Dr. Kamel Mohanna. Its centers in Beirut's suburbs, the south, the Bekaa and Mount Lebanon belong to the Ministry of Public Health's primary health care network, which keeps fees standardized and low. Mobile medical units extend care to informal settlements and remote villages, and the centers combine medical care with mental health, protection and vocational programs.

Track record: In 2025 Amel delivered 224,180 consultations in its primary healthcare centres plus 105,567 medication services, reaching 145,195 individuals across Lebanon.

Economic collapse has left many households in Lebanon unable to afford basic healthcare or rent, and both causes listed work through Amel Association International, a Lebanese organization. One subsidizes consultations and essential medicines at community health centers. The other provides rent support and essentials to displaced Lebanese families and Syrian refugees, two groups living side by side under the same pressures of conflict and financial crisis.
