Funds support for people detained for peaceful political activity since the 2021 coup and their families, including food, medicine, prison-visit costs and schooling for their children.
Why this matters in Myanmar
More than 32,000 people have been arrested on political grounds since the February 2021 coup, and close to 15,000 remain in detention by verified count, according to figures the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners published in October 2026. They include students, teachers, health workers who joined the civil disobedience movement, journalists and people accused of supporting resistance groups.
Trials are often held in closed courts inside prisons, under counterterrorism and incitement laws, with little time to prepare a defense. Lawyers who take these cases face pressure themselves, and families must often supply food, medicine and basic items that prisons do not provide. When a parent is jailed, the household loses income at the same moment it takes on new costs, including travel to distant prisons and, where possible, legal fees. Support for detainees and their families keeps them connected to the outside world and keeps their children in school.

Organization
Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (Burma) (AAPP) · Myanmar
Founded 2000 · Headquarters: Mae Sot, Thailand
Exile-based Burmese NGO documenting political prisoners detained since the 2021 coup and supporting detainees and their families.
How they work: AAPP was founded by former political prisoners, and that experience shapes its work. It verifies each arrest, charge and sentence through its own network of sources before adding a name to its public records, and keeps unverified cases separate. That documentation supports advocacy with UN bodies and foreign governments. Help to detainees and families goes through trusted, discreet channels, and the organization also provides support to released prisoners as they rebuild their lives. Operational details are withheld for safety.
Track record: AAPP provides political prisoners and families with food, medicines, prison-visit costs and children's education support, and publishes monthly arrest and sentencing figures.

Giving in Myanmar
Since the 2021 military coup, conflict inside Myanmar has displaced civilians and led to detentions for peaceful political activity. The three causes listed respond to those consequences: cross-border humanitarian aid through The Border Consortium, food, medicine and family support for detainees through the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, and check-in visits for elderly residents of conflict-affected areas through HelpAge International. Each works with people especially exposed to the crisis.
3 causes are listed in Myanmar, each with its own verified organization. $375,312 has been distributed to causes in Myanmar since 2021.
