Funds heating cost assistance for low-income pensioners during winter months.
Why this matters in France
Fuel poverty in France falls heavily on older people who own or rent old, poorly insulated houses in small towns and the countryside, heated by oil, electricity or gas, all of which became more expensive during the energy crisis that began in 2021. A pensioner on the minimum old-age allowance or a small farmer's or shopkeeper's pension can spend a large share of income on heating, and many cope by switching it off, heating a single room or cutting back on food.
The state's chèque énergie helps, but it is a fixed annual sum that rarely covers a winter's bills in a draughty house, and renovation grants involve paperwork and co-payments that isolated older people struggle to manage. Cold homes worsen respiratory and heart conditions and raise the risk of falls. Help with a bill or a fuel delivery, arranged by someone who already visits the person, reaches those who would never ask for it.
What your gift pays for
- Direct help with electricity, gas or heating oil bills for older people falling into arrears
- Deliveries of heating oil, wood or pellets for homes not connected to the gas network
- Blankets, warm clothing and draught-proofing for homes that cannot be renovated soon
- Volunteer visits during cold spells to check on older people living alone
Organization
Petits Freres des Pauvres · France
INSEE Sirene (SIREN), France · No. 775680259
Founded 1946 · Headquarters: Paris
French association supporting isolated and low-income older people through volunteer visits and material assistance.
How they work: Petits Frères des Pauvres works through local teams of volunteers supported by paid coordinators, who visit older people at home, phone them and organize shared meals, outings and holidays. Material help grows out of that relationship: when a volunteer or coordinator sees an unpaid bill or a cold flat, the association can step in with emergency financial aid and help the person claim benefits they are entitled to. It also publishes regular research on isolation among older people.
Track record: In 2024 accompanied or welcomed 26,190 older people and granted EUR 1.6 million in assistance to people in financial distress.

Giving in France
Pressures on cities and household budgets tie the French causes together. Samusocial de Paris provides shelter beds and hot meals for a homeless population estimated at 350,000, more than double the 2012 figure. Young refugees and asylum seekers receive French-language bridging classes as they enter school, children in lower-income neighborhoods get free one-to-one mentoring from university students, and low-income pensioners receive heating help in winter. Partners are French associations, among them Apprentis d'Auteuil, AFEV and Petits Freres des Pauvres.
4 causes are listed in France, each with its own verified organization. $264,271 has been distributed to causes in France since 2021.
