Why this matters in the United Kingdom

Behind the national total are people living with pain, reduced mobility and uncertainty for months at a time. Many of the longest waits are for planned operations such as hip and knee replacements, hernia repairs and gynecological procedures. Patients waiting for these often cannot work, drive or care for others, and some deteriorate until the eventual surgery becomes more complex.

Private treatment is the obvious way out, but it is open only to people with insurance or savings, which turns the length of a wait into a question of income. People on low incomes, older people living alone and those with several long-term conditions are also the least likely to know how to ask for a clinical review, use their right to choose a different provider, or raise a concern when their condition worsens. Practical guidance on those options, and someone to help raise a concern, can bring a worsening case back to a clinician's attention sooner.

What your gift pays for

  • Helpline advice explaining patients' rights to choose a provider and request a review
  • Casework support for patients whose condition gets worse while they wait
  • Plain-language guides on how waiting lists work and what to do when a wait drags on
  • Patient surveys that put the experience of long waits in front of NHS leaders and government

Organization

The Patients Association · United Kingdom

Charity Commission for England and Wales (company no. 02620761) · No. 1006733

Founded 1963 · Headquarters: Harrow

Patient charity with a helpline advising patients, including those on NHS waiting lists.

How they work: The Patients Association is an independent charity that speaks for patients rather than for any part of the health service. Its helpline staff and volunteers explain how the NHS and social care work, what rights patients have, and where to raise a concern or complaint. It also gathers patients' experiences through surveys and uses them in policy work with NHS England, government and professional bodies, including on the effects of long waits.

Track record: Through its helpline the Patients Association supports thousands of people each year with concerns and queries about the health and social care system.

Giving in the United Kingdom

Long waits and stretched budgets connect most of the British causes here. Several respond to NHS waiting lists in England, including the more than 550,000 children and young people waiting for mental health support, while others address rough sleeping, food bank demand still far above pre-pandemic levels, unlawful evictions and winter warmth for low-income pensioners. Youth employment, foster care, regional theatres and rare genetic disease research round out the range, with established charities such as The Trussell Trust, St Mungo's, Shelter and Age UK as partners.
