Why this matters in the United Kingdom

Young people who drift out of education and work rarely do so in one step. A missed term of college, a short job that ends, a period of anxiety at home, and months can pass without anyone noticing. Long-term sickness, particularly poor mental health, has become one of the most common reasons young people give for being out of work, and it often goes hand in hand with low confidence and few qualifications.

Being out of education or work early on leaves a mark. People who spend long spells NEET in their teens and early twenties tend to earn less and face more unemployment later, and the longer the gap, the harder it is to explain to an employer. Mainstream services such as Jobcentres and colleges are built for people who are ready to apply or enroll. Those who are further back need something first: a group to belong to, an adult who expects them to show up, and a sense that progress is possible.

What your gift pays for

  • One-to-one coaches who meet young people regularly and help set realistic goals
  • Group programs that rebuild confidence through team projects and short work placements
  • Travel costs, lunches and equipment that remove practical barriers to attending
  • Follow-up support after a young person starts a course, job or training place

Organization

The King's Trust · United Kingdom

Charity Commission for England and Wales · No. 1079675

Founded 1976 · Headquarters: London

UK youth charity running programmes to move young NEETs into education, training or work.

How they work: The King's Trust, known as The Prince's Trust until 2024, mixes group programs with individual support. Its Team program brings young people together for twelve weeks of projects, a residential trip and a work placement, often delivered with colleges and other local partners. Shorter Get Started courses tie activities to specific sectors, and an Enterprise program helps those who want to work for themselves. Volunteer mentors and staff stay in touch as participants move into the next step.

Track record: Founded in 1976, The King's Trust reports that three in four young people it supported over the last five years moved into work, education or training.

Giving in the United Kingdom

Long waits and stretched budgets connect most of the British causes here. Several respond to NHS waiting lists in England, including the more than 550,000 children and young people waiting for mental health support, while others address rough sleeping, food bank demand still far above pre-pandemic levels, unlawful evictions and winter warmth for low-income pensioners. Youth employment, foster care, regional theatres and rare genetic disease research round out the range, with established charities such as The Trussell Trust, St Mungo's, Shelter and Age UK as partners.

19 causes are listed in the United Kingdom, each with its own verified organization. $1,137,510 has been distributed to causes in the United Kingdom since 2021.
