Pre-positions emergency supplies ahead of monsoon season in flood-prone river basin states hit annually.
Why this matters in India
The Brahmaputra floods Assam every monsoon, and in many years it does so more than once. In north Bihar, the Kosi and other rivers coming down from Nepal break embankments and spread across farmland, earning the Kosi its old name, the sorrow of Bihar. Families on low-lying riverbanks and sandbar islands lose stored grain, livestock and the mud walls of their homes, and many spend weeks camped on embankments or roadsides.
The first days decide a great deal. Once water rises, roads and bridges go under and supplies have to come by boat, slowly and at high cost. Government relief camps open but are often crowded, and the poorest households, including those headed by women, older people and people with disabilities, may not reach them. Stocks that are already in place before the rains, together with trained volunteers who know which households are most exposed, mean help can start within hours rather than after the water has peaked.
What your gift pays for
- Pre-positioned stocks of tarpaulins, ropes, water containers and hygiene kits in flood-prone districts
- Transitional shelter kits that let families rebuild a dry living space after the water recedes
- Training for village volunteers in early warning, evacuation and first response
- Storage rented near at-risk villages so supplies are within reach once roads close
Organization
SEEDS (Sustainable Environment and Ecological Development Society) · India
FCRA registration (Ministry of Home Affairs, India), registered 27 Sep 2000 · No. 231660080
Founded 1994 · Headquarters: New Delhi
Runs flood preparedness and response in Assam, Bihar and other flood-prone states.
How they work: SEEDS was founded in 1994 by two architects, and its work leans on prevention as much as response. It works with community volunteers, local leaders, schools and officials to map local hazards and draw up village disaster management plans, and it often stays for three to five years after an emergency to help communities rebuild more safely. Its shelter work favors local materials and simple fixes that make homes more resilient, and in Bihar it has supported self-help groups that give members access to small loans.
Track record: In its 2025 Assam flood response SEEDS gave family and transitional shelter kits to 800+ families in Cachar and relief supplies to 200 families in Jorhat.

Giving in India
Scale defines the causes listed for India, which accounts for roughly 25 percent of global TB cases. One fund supports community TB treatment points and adherence support; others address falling groundwater, monsoon floods, degraded watersheds and irrigation for smallholder cooperatives. Social causes reach children living on city streets and workers held in debt bondage, and a central-kitchen fund carries forward the long-standing Hindu practice of giving free food, serving mainly schoolchildren. Partners include Operation ASHA, WaterAid India and International Justice Mission.
8 causes are listed in India, each with its own verified organization. $439,066 has been distributed to causes in India since 2021.
