Why this matters in Mexico
Tenosique sits a short distance from the Guatemalan border in Tabasco, on one of the southern routes people take after crossing from Petén. Many arrive on foot after days on jungle paths and rural roads, some of them robbed or assaulted along the way, with blistered feet, dehydration and no money left. Families with young children, unaccompanied teenagers and LGBTQ+ travelers are among those most exposed to extortion by criminal groups on this stretch.
Public shelter capacity in border towns is thin, and people without regular status often avoid government offices for fear of detention. Migration policy has also shifted repeatedly, and with routes to the United States largely closed since early 2025, many people now stay in the south of the country for months, seeking asylum through COMAR, the national refugee commission, or deciding whether to return. A few nights of shelter turn into much longer stays, and church-backed shelters end up carrying beds, meals and first aid that the state does not provide at scale.

Founded 2010 · Headquarters: Tenosique
Migrant shelter in Tenosique, Tabasco, providing lodging, food and support to migrants in transit.
How they work: La 72 takes its name from the 72 migrants murdered in San Fernando, Tamaulipas, in 2010, and it was founded by Franciscan friars. Alongside the dormitory and kitchen, staff and volunteers document abuses that guests report and help people understand whether they may qualify for asylum or a humanitarian visa. That pairing of basic care with human-rights work means a stay at the shelter is often the first point at which someone learns what protection they can request.
Track record: Since opening in Tenosique, Tabasco in 2010, La 72 has served over 50,000 migrants with shelter, food, clothing, first aid and legal orientation.

Giving in Mexico
Safety for people on the move and for those who report the news are the two concerns in Mexico. La 72, a shelter near the southern border, provides beds, meals and basic medical care for migrants in transit. ARTICLE 19 Mexico and Central America offers safety training and emergency relocation for journalists threatened over their work, in a country widely regarded as one of the most dangerous for the press outside active war zones.
