Funds household rainwater storage and filtration for delta communities where saltwater intrusion has spoiled wells.
Why this matters in Vietnam
Salt water pushes up the Mekong's branches every dry season, but its reach has grown. Upstream dams trap sediment and alter flows, sand mining deepens channels, heavy groundwater pumping is making the delta's land sink, and sea levels are rising. In the worst years, such as 2016 and 2020, salinity extended far inland and several delta provinces declared emergencies. In April 2024 Save the Children estimated that about 73,900 households in the delta had limited access to fresh water.
Families in rural hamlets have long stored rain in large ceramic jars, but these hold only a few weeks' supply, and drilled wells increasingly draw brackish water. Piped schemes reach towns more readily than scattered canal-side houses. Larger covered tanks and simple filtration let a household capture enough of the rainy season's water to last through the dry months.
What your gift pays for
- Large covered rainwater tanks that store enough water to carry a household through the dry season
- Gutters, first-flush diverters and fittings to collect cleaner water from household roofs
- Household filters and purification supplies that keep stored rainwater safe to drink over many weeks
- Priority support for older people, people with disabilities and the poorest households identified by local volunteers
Organization
Vietnam Red Cross Society · Vietnam
Law on Red Cross Activities (Vietnam) · No. Law No. 11/2008/QH12
Founded 1946 · Headquarters: Hanoi
Runs appeals and aid for Mekong Delta households hit by drought and saline intrusion, including water containers.
How they work: The Vietnam Red Cross Society is organized from national level down to provinces and communes, with members and volunteers living in the communities it serves. In drought and salinity emergencies, provincial chapters select households together with local authorities, then distribute water containers, tanks, purification supplies and cash, often with support from the IFRC and partner national societies. Commune-level volunteers also run disaster preparedness and hygiene activities, which helps the society reach hamlets that outside agencies rarely visit.
Track record: In 2016 the Viet Nam Red Cross helped over 74,000 drought- and saline-hit households with clean water, water containers and tanks and purification supplies.

Giving in Vietnam
Saltwater intrusion has spoiled wells in parts of the Mekong Delta, one of Vietnam's main rice-growing regions and among the areas most exposed to rising seas. Through the Vietnam Red Cross Society, this fund pays for household rainwater storage and filtration so delta families have safe water. It is the only cause we list for Vietnam at the moment, and further causes could be added as other partners are vetted.
This is currently the only cause we list in Vietnam. $91,205 has been distributed to causes in Vietnam since 2021.
