Why this matters in Afghanistan

Women in remote districts often give birth at home, hours from the nearest facility, with no one present who can manage heavy bleeding, obstructed labor or eclampsia, the complications behind most maternal deaths. Rules requiring women to travel with a male relative add delay at the moment it matters most, and many families cannot afford transport. Because care from male clinicians is often unacceptable or unavailable in childbirth, a shortage of female health workers translates directly into women going without care.

That shortage is set to deepen. Since December 2024, the de facto authorities have barred women from medical institutes, including midwifery and nursing courses, closing the main route by which new midwives entered the workforce. UN officials warned the ban would keep tens of thousands of women out of the health workforce for the foreseeable future, and cuts to international aid in 2025 have reduced services further. Midwives who are already qualified now stand between pregnant women and preventable death, and keeping them in post, supplied and supported has rarely mattered more.

Organization

Afghan Midwives Association · Afghanistan

Founded 2005 · Headquarters: Kabul

Professional midwives' association supporting midwife deployment and training.

How they work: As a professional body, the association works through its provincial chapters to keep midwives connected to colleagues, continuing education and current clinical standards. It advocates for midwives' working conditions and for women's access to skilled birth care, and is a member of the International Confederation of Midwives, which links it to global standards and peer support. Details of current operations are deliberately kept general to protect members and the women they serve.

Track record: Founded in 2005 with 80 members, the association has grown to over 3,000 midwives and student members across 34 provincial chapters.

Giving in Afghanistan

Restrictions on women and girls shape most of what is listed for Afghanistan. Two causes support community-run learning for girls barred from secondary school and vocational training through local women's organizations for women shut out of most public employment. The others fund trained birth attendants in provinces where maternal mortality remains high and well rehabilitation in villages affected by drought. Partners include the Afghan Institute of Learning, the Afghan Midwives Association and DACAAR, organizations with long experience working inside the country.

4 causes are listed in Afghanistan, each with its own verified organization. $328,840 has been distributed to causes in Afghanistan since 2021.
