Why this matters in South Sudan

A woman giving birth in rural South Sudan is more likely to be helped by a relative than by anyone with medical training. The country has very few certified midwives for its population, roads across much of it become impassable in the rainy season, and years of conflict have left many health facilities damaged, unstaffed or without supplies. Hemorrhage, obstructed labor, infection and eclampsia, all largely treatable with skilled care, remain common causes of death.

The shortage is partly a training problem. For decades very few institutions trained midwives, and the pipeline is still small. Each newly qualified midwife can attend births, recognize complications early, refer women before it is too late and pass skills on to traditional birth attendants nearby. Training people from the communities they will serve matters as well, because graduates who speak local languages and understand local customs are better placed to work in rural postings than staff brought in from elsewhere.

What your gift pays for

  • Tuition, board and clinical placements for student midwives recruited from across the country
  • Teaching equipment, including birth-simulation models and supplies for the skills laboratory
  • Supervised clinical practice at partner hospitals so students attend real births before graduating
  • Tutor salaries and housing that keep experienced midwifery teachers at the college

Organization

Solidarity with South Sudan · South Sudan

Founded 2008 · Headquarters: Juba

Runs a nursing and midwifery training college producing midwives for South Sudan.

How they work: Solidarity with South Sudan is a collaboration of Catholic religious congregations whose members, from many countries, live and work in the country. Its health program centers on the Catholic Health Training Institute in Wau, a residential college offering diplomas in nursing and midwifery, with students recruited from different regions and clinical training in local hospitals. Alongside health, it trains teachers, supports sustainable agriculture and runs pastoral programs, working with the local Church.

Track record: Since 2010 its Catholic Health Training Institute in Wau has graduated 311 nurses and 189 midwives, 28% of all midwives certified in South Sudan.

Giving in South Sudan

Years of conflict have left South Sudan with deep gaps in schooling, maternal care and child nutrition, and the three causes listed here address each in turn. Volunteer tutors and reading materials support learners in a country with a literacy rate of about 34.5 percent. Midwifery training prepares certified midwives for a country where maternal mortality is far above the global average, and therapeutic feeding reaches children under five at a time when roughly one in five is acutely malnourished. Partners include Windle Trust International and Concern Worldwide.

3 causes are listed in South Sudan, each with its own verified organization. $233,015 has been distributed to causes in South Sudan since 2021.
