Why this matters in South Sudan

Several shocks are hitting the same families at once. Years of heavy flooding have drowned crops and cattle grazing land in Unity, Jonglei and other low-lying states, while local conflict keeps people moving. Since war broke out in Sudan in April 2023, large numbers of returnees and refugees have crossed south into areas that were already short of food. Prices for staples have risen sharply as the currency has weakened.

Young children feel this first. A child who eats one thin meal a day and then catches diarrhea or malaria can slide into severe wasting within weeks. Health facilities are few and far apart, roads close for months in the rainy season, and many mothers cannot leave other children and fields to walk days to a clinic. Treatment is effective when it arrives early, which is why finding cases in the community, and treating most of them at home, matters so much.

Concern Worldwide - South Sudan · South Sudan

Charities Regulator Ireland (parent: Concern Worldwide) · No. 20009090

Founded 2011 · Headquarters: Juba

Runs community nutrition programmes treating acutely malnourished children in South Sudan.

How they work: Concern follows the community-based management of acute malnutrition approach. Volunteers screen children in villages and camps with color-coded arm tapes, and uncomplicated cases receive therapeutic food to eat at home with weekly or fortnightly checks. Only children with complications are admitted to stabilization centers. Concern also teaches mothers to measure their own children so cases are caught earlier, and runs this work through government health facilities where possible, alongside water, sanitation and livelihood programs.

Track record: Concern's nutrition centre in South Sudan's Bentiu camp has treated almost 20,000 children aged zero to five for malnutrition since it opened.

Giving in South Sudan

Years of conflict have left South Sudan with deep gaps in schooling, maternal care and child nutrition, and the three causes listed here address each in turn. Volunteer tutors and reading materials support learners in a country with a literacy rate of about 34.5 percent. Midwifery training prepares certified midwives for a country where maternal mortality is far above the global average, and therapeutic feeding reaches children under five at a time when roughly one in five is acutely malnourished. Partners include Windle Trust International and Concern Worldwide.
