Funds indoor residual spraying and rapid diagnostic test kits in one of the six countries carrying the bulk of regional malaria transmission.
Why this matters in Djibouti
Malaria was close to disappearing here a little over a decade ago, with just 27 cases recorded in 2012. Since then annual cases have climbed past 70,000, driven by Anopheles stephensi, an invasive mosquito from South Asia that, unlike most African malaria vectors, breeds in urban water tanks, cisterns and construction sites. In a small country where most people live in the capital, that brought transmission into dense neighborhoods with little prior exposure and therefore little immunity.
The species resists several common insecticides and bites at times when people are not under nets, so bed nets alone protect less well than elsewhere on the continent. Djibouti sits at a crossroads of shipping and migration linking Ethiopia, Somalia and Yemen, and the mosquito has since been found across the Horn of Africa. Spraying the inside walls of homes, removing breeding sites and testing every fever quickly, so confirmed cases are treated before they spread infection, are the main tools available, and each depends on a steady supply of insecticide, test kits and trained teams.
What your gift pays for
- Insecticide and spray equipment for indoor residual spraying of homes in high-transmission neighborhoods
- Rapid diagnostic test kits for health centers so every fever can be tested on the spot
- Training and daily allowances for spray teams and the health workers who carry out testing
- Inspections of water containers and building sites to find and remove mosquito breeding sites
Organization
Programme National de Lutte contre le Paludisme (Ministry of Health, Djibouti) · Djibouti
Government body
The national malaria programme runs indoor residual spraying and diagnosis under the national malaria strategy.
How they work: The national program, within the Ministry of Health, sets malaria policy and coordinates prevention, testing and treatment through public health centers, with international partners such as the Global Fund financing major components. After studies found parasites that older rapid tests could miss, it switched to tests better suited to local strains, and it concentrates spraying on urban areas where the invasive mosquito drives transmission. In 2024 the country also hosted a pilot release, run in partnership with the government, of genetically modified mosquitoes designed to suppress Anopheles stephensi.
Track record: Djibouti secured Global Fund money for indoor residual spraying in Djibouti city and introduced a new RDT; incidence fell to 34.1/1,000 in 2022 from 59.1 in 2020-2021.

Giving in Djibouti
Positioned on the Horn of Africa migration route, Djibouti hosts refugees and displaced people in camps, and the World Food Programme distributes food to them through one of the two causes listed. The other works with the national malaria program on indoor residual spraying and rapid diagnostic tests, in one of six countries carrying most of the region's malaria transmission. Together they cover two pressures on a small country at the crossroads of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula.
2 causes are listed in Djibouti, each with its own verified organization. $226,616 has been distributed to causes in Djibouti since 2021.
