Why this matters in Sudan

Malaria in Sudan rises with the rains. During and after the rainy season, standing water allows mosquitoes to breed, and cases climb sharply across large parts of the country. The war has made each season more dangerous. Millions of people have been displaced into crowded camps and host communities, often sleeping outdoors or in makeshift shelters, while clinics that once diagnosed and treated malaria have closed or run out of tests and drugs.

Children under five and pregnant women face the highest risk of severe illness and death. A long-lasting insecticidal net hung over a sleeping space blocks mosquitoes during the night hours when most bites occur, and the insecticide kills mosquitoes that land on it, which lowers transmission for neighbors too. Nets wear out and are lost when families flee again, so mass campaigns have to be repeated and topped up as people move.

What your gift pays for

  • Long-lasting insecticidal nets for households in displacement sites and host communities
  • Transport and storage to move nets from central warehouses to local distribution points
  • Household registration so nets cover every sleeping space and are allocated fairly
  • Community volunteers who show families how to hang, use and care for their nets

Organization

UNICEF Sudan · Sudan

UN agency

Founded 1952 · Headquarters: Khartoum

Procures and distributes insecticide-treated bed nets with Global Fund support.

How they work: UNICEF procures nets through its global Supply Division and works with Sudan's Federal Ministry of Health and state health authorities, which plan and lead campaigns. A campaign typically starts with household registration, used to calculate how many nets each home needs, followed by distribution through local volunteers and health workers who also explain correct use. UNICEF is funded entirely by voluntary contributions from governments, pooled funds such as the Global Fund, and private donors.

Track record: In May 2025 UNICEF, the Global Fund and Sudan's Federal Ministry of Health launched distribution of about 16 million bed nets across 14 states, expected to protect 28 million people.

Giving in Sudan

The causes listed for Sudan respond to a civil war that has collapsed much of the formal health system and cut supply routes into besieged areas where famine has been confirmed. Medecins Sans Frontieres keeps mobile surgical units running, the World Food Programme delivers emergency food into cut-off areas, and the Norwegian Refugee Council provides shelter and essential items for newly displaced households. UNICEF distributes insecticide-treated bed nets against malaria, which remains a heavy burden alongside the conflict.

4 causes are listed in Sudan, each with its own verified organization. $305,008 has been distributed to causes in Sudan since 2021.
