Funds veterinary access for smallholder farmers whose livelihoods depend directly on livestock health.
Why this matters in Zambia
For rural families in Zambia, goats, chickens, pigs and a few cattle are savings on the hoof: animals are sold to pay school fees or a hospital bill, provide milk and eggs, and in the case of oxen, pull the plow. Disease can wipe out that buffer quickly. East Coast fever and other tick-borne illnesses kill cattle in large numbers, Newcastle disease sweeps through village poultry, and African swine fever has repeatedly struck pig keepers.
Government veterinary officers exist but cover very large areas, often without reliable transport, and private vets rarely set up in remote districts where farmers can only pay small amounts. Vaccines that must stay cold are hard to deliver beyond the main roads. Without basic animal health care nearby, a smallholder can lose most of a herd before anyone with training sees it. Women, who often manage poultry and small stock, are among the farmers least likely to be reached by extension and veterinary services.
What your gift pays for
- Training and kits for community animal health workers serving villages far from a vet
- Vaccination against Newcastle disease and tick-borne cattle diseases, with cold-chain support
- Dipping and deworming supplies that prevent common, costly livestock losses
- Farmer training in housing, feeding and disease prevention for goats, cattle and poultry
Organization
Heifer International Zambia · Zambia
US IRS EIN (parent: Heifer Project International) · No. 35-1019477
Founded 1988 · Headquarters: Lusaka
Heifer International's Zambia programme works with smallholder farmers on livestock production and animal health to raise household incomes.
How they work: Heifer works through farmer groups rather than one-off handouts. Families receive livestock and training, and each agrees to pass on offspring and skills to another family, a practice the organization calls Passing on the Gift, so benefits spread through a community. Day-to-day animal health relies heavily on community animal health workers, local people trained to vaccinate, treat common illnesses and refer serious cases to government vets. Programs increasingly link groups to markets, such as dairy and poultry value chains, so healthier herds become steady income.
Track record: Working in Zambia since 1988, Heifer has reached 506,762 household participants to date, including 12,159 in 2024, through livestock and crop value chains.

Giving in Zambia
Rural livelihoods and wildlife link the four Zambian causes. Smallholder households recovering from consecutive poor harvests receive training in conservation farming, and Heifer International funds veterinary access for farmers whose income depends on livestock. In South Luangwa, rangers protect elephants and other wildlife from snaring and ivory poaching. MISA Zambia supports community radio and rural journalists in areas that national media rarely reach, adding an information dimension alongside farming and conservation.
4 causes are listed in Zambia, each with its own verified organization. $374,290 has been distributed to causes in Zambia since 2021.
