Why this matters in Lebanon

The financial collapse that began in 2019 wiped out much of the value of savings and wages, and the Beirut port explosion of August 2020 deepened the damage. For years the country has hosted more refugees per person than anywhere else in the world, most of them Syrians living in informal settlements, garages and crowded apartments. The 2024 war between Israel and Hezbollah displaced more than a million people from the south, the Bekaa and Beirut's southern suburbs, and renewed war from March 2026 uprooted more than a million again within weeks, according to government figures.

Rent has become one of the heaviest burdens. Many landlords demand payment in US dollars while incomes have not recovered, so displaced Lebanese families and refugees alike fall behind, double up, or face eviction. Public safety nets are thin, and aid for Syrians has been cut as funding shrank. Families who have lost homes or livelihoods need short-term help with rent, food and household basics to stay housed while they recover.

  • Rent support for displaced Lebanese and refugee families at risk of eviction

  • Primary health care through mobile clinics that reach displaced households

Organization

Amel Association International · Lebanon

Public utility recognition by presidential decree (Lebanon) · No. Presidential Decree 5832 (1994)

Founded 1979 · Headquarters: Beirut

Lebanese NGO with ~40 centres and mobile clinics running an emergency response for displaced Lebanese and Syrian families.

How they work: Amel is a non-sectarian organization that serves people regardless of nationality, religion or political affiliation, which lets it work with Lebanese and Syrian families in the same neighborhoods. Its centers offer primary health care, mental health support, child protection, education and vocational training, and mobile units extend these services to shelters and remote areas. During emergencies the same network shifts to relief distributions, staffed by local teams who already know the communities.

Track record: In March 2026 Amel reached 54,937 people across 170 sites through 40 centres and mobile units, distributing 4,553 relief items including food parcels and bedding.

Giving in Lebanon

Economic collapse has left many households in Lebanon unable to afford basic healthcare or rent, and both causes listed work through Amel Association International, a Lebanese organization. One subsidizes consultations and essential medicines at community health centers. The other provides rent support and essentials to displaced Lebanese families and Syrian refugees, two groups living side by side under the same pressures of conflict and financial crisis.

2 causes are listed in Lebanon, each with its own verified organization. $164,534 has been distributed to causes in Lebanon since 2021.
