Why this matters in Cambodia

Three decades of war, from the early 1970s to the final Khmer Rouge holdouts in the late 1990s, left mines and unexploded bombs across much of the country. The heaviest mine contamination lies in the northwest, along the old K5 belt near the Thai border, while American bombing in the east left cluster munitions and shells. Much of this land is now farmland or village ground, and families who plough, clear scrub or dig foundations still find devices the hard way.

The toll has fallen sharply from the 1990s, but it has not stopped. The Landmine Monitor recorded 49 mine and explosive remnant casualties in 2024, sixteen of them children. National clearance plans prioritize large, high-impact areas, so a small field behind a village house or a patch on the edge of a rice paddy can wait for years. For the family that owns it, that patch means land they cannot farm and a path their children are told never to take.

What your gift pays for

  • Deminer wages, protective equipment and detectors for small village clearance teams
  • Field medics and vehicles that keep a team operating safely on remote tasks
  • Risk education sessions in village schools on recognizing and reporting devices
  • Survey visits to confirm contamination that villagers report before clearance work begins

Organization

Cambodian Self Help Demining (CSHD) · Cambodia

Founded 2007 · Headquarters: Siem Reap

Cambodian NGO clearing landmines/UXO from villages and farmland with risk education.

How they work: CSHD was founded by Aki Ra, a former child soldier who laid mines as a boy and later began clearing them, and who also set up the Cambodia Landmine Museum near Siem Reap. Its teams are made up of Cambodian deminers working under national accreditation, and they concentrate on small, often lower-priority village sites that larger operators may not reach for years, frequently after villagers report a problem. Cleared land returns to families for farming and housing, and teams pair clearance with risk education.

Track record: Formally established in 2007, CSHD reports clearing more than 300 minefields and over 11,000,000 square metres of land in rural Cambodia.

Giving in Cambodia

Decades after the conflicts that ran from the 1970s into the 1990s, landmines and unexploded ordnance still contaminate farmland and villages in Cambodia. This fund supports Cambodian Self Help Demining in clearing that land and teaching children to recognize the risks. It is the one Cambodian cause currently listed, and additional causes may join it once further partners are vetted.

This is currently the only cause we list in Cambodia. $107,212 has been distributed to causes in Cambodia since 2021.
