Funds legal support for communities disputing land claims tied to mining concessions.
Why this matters in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Copper and cobalt from the former Katanga province, now split into Haut-Katanga and Lualaba, feed a large share of the world's battery supply chains. As open-pit mines expand around Kolwezi and Lubumbashi, villages and city neighborhoods sitting on or beside concessions are being relocated, sometimes with little notice and with compensation that does not replace farmland, homes or livelihoods. In June 2025 Amnesty International and a Congolese governance group publicly asked for a pause in relocations around Kolwezi, saying families were being moved without resettlement plans.
Many affected households farm land held under customary arrangements, without formal title, which leaves them weak when a company holds a state-issued mining permit. The mining code requires consultation and compensation, but enforcement is inconsistent, courts are slow, and few rural families can pay a lawyer, travel to a provincial court or gather the evidence a claim needs. Legal support lets communities document losses, challenge unlawful evictions and negotiate fairer terms before demolition begins.
What your gift pays for
- Lawyers' fees and court filing costs for communities challenging evictions or inadequate compensation
- Surveys of homes, fields and graves before relocation, recorded as evidence for compensation claims
- Travel and lodging for community representatives attending hearings in provincial courts
- Rights sessions on the mining code for residents ahead of negotiations with companies
Organization
Action Contre l'Impunité pour les Droits Humains (ACIDH) · Democratic Republic of the Congo
Lubumbashi-based NGO that litigates mining-related evictions and relocations on behalf of local communities, working with the Institute for Human Rights and Development in Africa (IHRDA).
How they work: ACIDH ties legal action to the communities it represents. In Haut-Katanga it has prepared cases with affected residents themselves, bringing them together with lawyers, other civil society groups and judicial officers so that the people facing eviction shape the claims made on their behalf. Its litigation has been pursued before Congolese courts, and it has looked at legal advocacy beyond domestic courts when national remedies stall.
Track record: ACIDH has pursued joint litigation with IHRDA for mining-affected communities in DR Congo and in 2016 co-hosted a Lubumbashi colloquium on mining-related evictions and compensation.

Giving in the Democratic Republic of the Congo
Repeated displacement in the eastern provinces is the setting for the Congolese causes. The International Committee of the Red Cross registers displaced people and traces families separated by shifting frontlines, while the Norwegian Refugee Council helps those able to return as some areas stabilize. A third cause, with the Congolese group ACIDH, provides legal support to communities disputing land claims tied to mining concessions, linking the country's mineral wealth to questions of land and rights.
3 causes are listed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, each with its own verified organization. $275,038 has been distributed to causes in the Democratic Republic of the Congo since 2021.
