Funds legal support for indigenous communities disputing land claims against palm oil and mining concessions.
Why this matters in Indonesia
Indigenous communities on Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua have managed forests and farmland under customary law for generations, yet much of that land has been designated state forest estate or allocated as concessions for oil palm, pulpwood and mining. When a company arrives with a permit from Jakarta or the district, villagers who cannot show formal title are often treated as encroachers on their own land, and some face criminal charges for clearing fields or harvesting timber.
The Constitutional Court ruled in 2012 that customary forests are not state forests, but turning that ruling into recognition on the ground still requires a district regulation and a ministry decision, and a national bill on Indigenous peoples, under discussion for well over a decade, was still awaiting passage in 2026. Each step demands maps, evidence of customary institutions and legal skill that remote communities rarely have. Legal support helps them defend members who are prosecuted and push recognition claims through the bureaucracy before concessions are cleared.

Organization
Aliansi Masyarakat Adat Nusantara (AMAN) · Indonesia
Kementerian Hukum dan HAM (Ministry of Law and Human Rights) decree; NPWP 02.072.633.7-015.000 · No. AHU-0000340.AH.01.08.Tahun 2017
Founded 1999 · Headquarters: Jakarta
National alliance of Indonesian indigenous communities advocating and litigating for customary land rights against plantation and extractive concessions.
How they work: AMAN is a membership organization: its member communities elect national leadership at a congress, and it has regional and district chapters. Legal defense runs largely through an affiliated association of advocates, PPMAN, which represents community members facing prosecution. AMAN also helps communities map their territories, with the maps lodged with BRWA, the customary territory registration agency it co-founded, and lobbies district governments to pass regulations recognizing customary communities.
Track record: Founded in 1999 and representing thousands of Indigenous communities, AMAN has led legal advocacy that advanced recognition of customary forests (hutan adat) in Indonesia.

Giving in Indonesia
Forests, reefs and the communities that depend on them dominate the Indonesian list. Satellite monitoring and field investigations trace forest loss to palm oil, AMAN supports indigenous communities contesting palm oil and mining concessions, and coral nurseries restore reefs damaged by bleaching and dynamite fishing. Remote island patients receive TB diagnosis and treatment in a country with roughly 10 percent of global cases, while other funds support river monitoring and water testing below polluted rivers and shelter for families evacuated from volcanoes.
