Funds legal support helping internally displaced families pursue land restitution claims tied to Colombia's decades-long internal conflict.
Why this matters in Colombia
Decades of armed conflict displaced millions of Colombians, many of them small farmers whose land was seized by armed groups or bought under duress and later absorbed into cattle ranches, plantations or mining concessions. Urabá, in the northwest near the border with Panama, was among the hardest-hit regions, as paramilitary violence in the 1990s and 2000s drove out entire communities.
The 2011 Victims and Land Restitution Law created a special legal route to return land, but it has moved slowly. Claimants must document possession that may date back decades, often against well-funded opponents who hold formal titles. Restitution claimants have been threatened and killed, and even families who win their case may return to land without roads, housing or credit. Most displaced families cannot afford a lawyer, so legal support helps them prepare evidence, follow cases through the specialized land courts and press for rulings to be carried out.
What your gift pays for
- Lawyers and paralegals who prepare restitution claims and represent families before land courts
- Gathering evidence such as testimony, maps and property records that prove prior possession
- Follow-up on court rulings to press authorities to deliver land, titles and support
- Monitoring of land court rulings to show where restitution stalls and which regions lag behind
Organization
Fundación Forjando Futuros · Colombia
Colombian NGO supporting displaced victims' land restitution claims.
How they work: Forjando Futuros combines support for individual claimants with public monitoring of the restitution system. It works with displaced families from Urabá and other parts of Antioquia on their claims, and it systematically analyzes rulings by the specialized land judges to show where cases stall, which regions lag behind, and whether rulings are actually enforced. Its reports are presented publicly and to authorities, using the data to push for faster and fuller restitution.
Track record: Working with conflict victims in Urabá and Antioquia, it reported in 2016 that only 2,943 of 87,118 land restitution claims had been resolved in victims' favour.

Giving in Colombia
Decades of internal conflict over land have left Colombia with one of the world's largest internal displacement crises, and that history connects its causes. Community learning circles reach children in displaced communities, and legal support helps families pursue land restitution claims. The Colombian Red Cross assists Venezuelan migrants along the main overland route through the country, while harm reduction and peer outreach serve people who use drugs in cities shaped by the drug trade. Partners range from the national Red Cross to local foundations.
