Funds safety training and emergency relocation for journalists facing threats because of their reporting.
Why this matters in Mexico
Mexico is consistently ranked among the deadliest countries for journalists outside a declared war. Reporters covering organized crime, local corruption, land disputes and elections face threats, surveillance, physical attacks and killings, and in many documented cases the aggressors are public officials rather than criminal groups alone. Very few of these crimes end in convictions, which tells those responsible that intimidation works.
The risk falls hardest on local reporters who run small outlets or social media news pages with no institutional backing, often in states where criminal groups and local authorities are entangled. A federal Protection Mechanism exists, but journalists and press groups have criticized it for slow responses, limited protective measures and weak coordination with state governments. When a threat becomes credible, a reporter may need to leave their community within days, and relocation, safety planning and legal follow-up all have to be paid for by someone.

Organization
ARTICLE 19 México y Centroamérica · Mexico
Founded 2006 · Headquarters: Mexico City
Regional office of ARTICLE 19 documenting attacks on journalists in Mexico and providing protection and safety support to threatened reporters.
How they work: ARTICLE 19's Mexico and Central America office combines documentation, protection and litigation. Its team verifies and records each reported aggression, which underpins its annual reports and its repeated finding that public officials are among the most frequent aggressors. Journalists at risk receive protection support and help to access the federal Protection Mechanism, while the legal team accompanies cases before prosecutors and courts. The office also publishes analysis on surveillance, digital rights and access to information.
Track record: ARTICLE 19 documents attacks on the press, recording 451 aggressions against journalists in Mexico in 2025, about one every 19 hours.

Giving in Mexico
Safety for people on the move and for those who report the news are the two concerns in Mexico. La 72, a shelter near the southern border, provides beds, meals and basic medical care for migrants in transit. ARTICLE 19 Mexico and Central America offers safety training and emergency relocation for journalists threatened over their work, in a country widely regarded as one of the most dangerous for the press outside active war zones.
