Funds regular home visits for elderly residents living alone in rural areas with Japan's highest rates of unattended deaths among seniors.
Why this matters in Japan
Japan's National Police Agency counted 76,020 people who died alone at home in 2024, and roughly three quarters of them were 65 or older. Many lay undiscovered for days or longer. The pattern reflects a demographic shift: more older people are widowed or never married, children have moved to the cities, and in depopulated rural towns the neighbors who once checked on each other are themselves very old.
Public long-term care insurance funds services for people certified as needing care, but an independent-seeming person in their eighties who lives alone may not qualify and may not want to be a burden. Volunteer welfare commissioners (minsei iin) cover wide rural areas, and their ranks are aging and hard to refill. Regular visits fill the space between, noticing early when someone stops eating, misses a hospital appointment or has a fall, and making sure that anyone who does die alone is found quickly.

Organization
Japan National Council of Social Welfare (Zenkoku Shakai Fukushi Kyogikai) and local social welfare councils · Japan
Founded 1951 · Headquarters: Tokyo
Network of social welfare councils that run community watch (mimamori) and home-visit programmes for older people living alone.
How they work: Social welfare councils (shakai fukushi kyogikai) exist in every prefecture and almost every municipality, with the national council coordinating policy and training. Local councils recruit and support residents who volunteer for neighborhood watch activities, work closely with the minsei iin welfare commissioners, run volunteer centers and organize small community salons where older people meet. Many local watch networks also involve newspaper deliverers, utility workers and shops, who agree to report signs that someone living alone may be in trouble.
Track record: A 2015 national survey found 67% of social welfare councils ran neighbourhood watch-over activities (regular visits, check-ins), covering about 616,360 elderly people living alone.

Giving in Japan
Demographic change lies behind every Japanese cause on the list. Rural seniors living alone on fixed pensions receive subsidized meal delivery and regular home visits, in areas with the country's highest rates of unattended deaths among older people. The National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology conducts dementia research as case numbers rise with an aging population. Florence, a Japanese nonprofit, expands subsidized childcare to ease a shortage of caregiver capacity that leaves some mothers isolated.
4 causes are listed in Japan, each with its own verified organization. $364,226 has been distributed to causes in Japan since 2021.
