Why this matters in Indonesia

The archipelago stretches across thousands of inhabited islands, and on many of the smaller ones in eastern provinces such as Maluku, Nusa Tenggara and Papua, the nearest laboratory able to confirm tuberculosis is a boat ride away. Patients with a persistent cough often wait, try local remedies or buy medicine without a prescription before being tested. Rapid molecular testing machines are mostly installed in district hospitals and larger health centers, so samples must be transported, and results can take days or weeks to come back.

Once diagnosed, a patient faces at least six months of daily treatment, and much longer for drug-resistant TB. Medicines are free through the public program, but the costs around them are not: fares for regular check-ups, lost earnings for fishers and farmers, and extra food for patients who are often undernourished. Families sometimes sell assets or borrow to cover them, and stigma remains strong in small communities. Without help with transport, testing and day-to-day encouragement, many patients stop treatment early, which leads to relapse and resistance.

What your gift pays for

  • Transport of sputum samples from island health centers to laboratories with rapid molecular testing
  • Boat and bus fares, plus meals, for patients attending diagnosis and follow-up visits
  • Training for community cadres who find people with symptoms and support them through treatment
  • Nutritional support for undernourished patients during the months of treatment

Organization

Yayasan KNCV Indonesia · Indonesia

Founded 2017 · Headquarters: Jakarta

Indonesian foundation supporting TB case finding and patient support through community cadres.

How they work: Yayasan KNCV Indonesia acts mainly as a technical and support organization. It works with provincial and district health offices on TB control and helps build civil society capacity, especially the patient support groups in which former TB patients counsel and accompany people still in treatment. One of its founders is a former drug-resistant TB patient who chaired an early patient support group. It also advocates on TB policy and remains part of the international KNCV network.

Track record: Founded in April 2017 as an independent Indonesian foundation, Yayasan KNCV supports provincial TB control, patient support groups and TB advocacy in Indonesia.

Giving in Indonesia

Forests, reefs and the communities that depend on them dominate the Indonesian list. Satellite monitoring and field investigations trace forest loss to palm oil, AMAN supports indigenous communities contesting palm oil and mining concessions, and coral nurseries restore reefs damaged by bleaching and dynamite fishing. Remote island patients receive TB diagnosis and treatment in a country with roughly 10 percent of global cases, while other funds support river monitoring and water testing below polluted rivers and shelter for families evacuated from volcanoes.
