Why this matters in Jordan
Winter in Amman, Irbid and Mafraq is colder than many outsiders expect, with freezing nights, heavy rain and occasional snow on high ground. Most Syrian refugees live not in camps but in rented apartments in towns, many of them damp, poorly insulated and heated, if at all, by a single gas or kerosene heater. Low-income local households in the same neighborhoods face the same bills.
Winter assistance from international agencies has shrunk as funding for the Syria response has fallen, and cash aid now reaches fewer families. Heating fuel is expensive relative to informal wages, so families ration heat, keep sick children home from school or fall behind on rent. Since the fall of the Assad government in December 2024 some refugees have gone back to Syria, but many remain, and the cold months are no easier for those who stay or for the poor host families around them.
What your gift pays for
- Thick blankets and warm clothing for children and older people in poorly insulated homes
- Kerosene or gas refills for household heaters through the coldest weeks of winter
- Vouchers that let families buy heating fuel from local suppliers
- Plastic sheeting and small repairs that stop rain from leaking into rented rooms
Organization
Caritas Jordan · Jordan
Founded 1967 · Headquarters: Amman
Catholic relief organisation in Jordan providing humanitarian aid, including winter assistance, to Syrian refugees and host communities.
How they work: Caritas Jordan works through a network of centers and a large body of volunteers, many of them young people from local parishes, which lets staff identify households through home visits as well as referral lists. It serves Muslims and Christians alike, and its winter aid sits alongside year-round health care, education support and cash assistance for refugees and poor Jordanians.
Track record: In December 2012 Caritas Jordan launched a winterisation campaign to provide 5,000 Syrian refugee families with blankets, heaters and kerosene vouchers.

Giving in Jordan
Since 2011, Syrian refugees have lived in Jordanian host communities where housing costs have risen sharply, and that shared life frames all four causes. The Norwegian Refugee Council provides rent subsidies, a second fund provides food, rent support and Ramadan and Eid aid through Islamic Relief, and Caritas Jordan distributes winter blankets and heating fuel through its centers and volunteers to refugees and local households alike. A research fund at the King Hussein Foundation studies long-term refugee health to inform regional planning.
4 causes are listed in Jordan, each with its own verified organization. $283,856 has been distributed to causes in Jordan since 2021.
