Why this matters in Belarus
Families of people jailed after the disputed August 2020 presidential election carry much of the cost of repression. When a parent is imprisoned on political charges, the household often loses its main income, and relatives may be questioned, dismissed from state jobs or pressured to emigrate. Lawyers' fees, travel to distant penal colonies and fines all fall on those left behind.
Independent civil society inside the country has been almost entirely dismantled: hundreds of NGOs have been forcibly liquidated, and human rights defenders from Viasna have been among those imprisoned. Giving money to prisoners' families can be prosecuted as financing extremism, so parishes and congregations that once might have helped quietly now face real legal risk for doing so. Support therefore comes largely from outside, with care taken not to expose the people who receive it.

How they work: Libereco's main tool is sustained political attention. Under its godparenthood scheme, a parliamentarian takes on a named prisoner, writes letters, raises the case in their own parliament and presses Belarusian diplomats, which keeps individual cases visible abroad. The organization campaigns and documents cases from Germany and Switzerland, and has no office inside the country.
Track record: Through its #WeStandBYyou campaign launched in 2020, over 400 MPs from 23 democracies became godparents for Belarusian political prisoners; Libereco also links MPs with prisoners' families.
